Always Look on the B-Side of Life

In My Tree by Pearl Jam (1996)

By Chris Cappello on January 30, 2018 • ( Leave a comment )

“Up here so high, the bars they break…  Up here so high, the sky I scrape…  Had my eyes peeled both wide open, and I got a glimpse…  Of my innocence…got back my innocence…” I spent a week in the Philippines in 1996 when I was in the […]

If Not For You by Shakey Graves (2014)

By Chris Cappello on January 29, 2018 • ( Leave a comment )

“Well if all the lights said stop / And the oceans they did drop / Then I’d always feel so on top if not for you” I loves me a good friend music recommendation.  So much of what I listen to is based on my extensive (obsessive) research […]

Huarache Lights by Hot Chip (2015)

By Chris Cappello on January 27, 2018 • ( Leave a comment )

“I got something for your mind, your body, and your soul.  Everyday of my life.” I used to think I couldn’t dance.  I wasn’t wrong.  I had no rhythm, no grace, no silky smooth movement.  Just a combination of horrible, awkward gyrations and pauses.  I was unsure of […]

Set the Ray to Jerry by Smashing Pumpkins (1995)

By Chris Cappello on January 26, 2018 • ( Leave a comment )

“Born to please / Every simple need / I stand alone” I spend most of my day, consciously and unconsciously, looking for symmetry, perfect angles, and order with the things that surround me.  It’s satisfying to see items on flat surfaces are at right angles or straight lines […]

Beginner’s Luck by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard (2017)

By Chris Cappello on January 25, 2018 • ( Leave a comment )

“Join me at the table if you’d like to place a bet / All the cash that’s filling your pockets is waiting to be spent.” There’s ambition, and then there’s AMBITION.  King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, in addition to having the best band name in rock today, released […]

Last Bongo in Belgium by Incredible Bongo Band (1973)

By Chris Cappello on January 24, 2018 • ( Leave a comment )

My new go-to spot to lose myself in “walking around music” is the supermarket — Wegman’s in Johnson City, NY to be more specific.  I actually enjoy putting together a grocery list, grabbing a pair of headphones, and shopping by myself, as long as I have something to […]

You Got It by Mudhoney (1989)

By Chris Cappello on January 23, 2018 • ( Leave a comment )

“You give it away like free samples / But I don’t want what anyone can have” I was at a work event last week and we liked to enjoy ourselves at night.  It was one of those events where, following dinner, adults from their mid-20’s to mid-50’s turn into […]

De Noite Na Cama by Erasmo Carlos (1971)

By Chris Cappello on June 1, 2017 • ( Leave a comment )

“De noite na cama / Eu fico pensando / Se você me ama / E quando” I can smell this song.  I’m serious.  Pheromones, a certain funk, penetrates the part of my brain that conjures up memories, whether they be real or fabricated.  I smell bodies and heat and imagine […]

River Song by Dennis Wilson (1977)

By Chris Cappello on May 31, 2017 • ( Leave a comment )

One of my close Navy friends used to be a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan and probably still is.  We’d crank the Pumpkins often back in the mid 90’s during their heyday.  He’d get completely lost in Corgan’s majesty and say, “I can’t believe everyone in the world isn’t […]

Under the Mango Tree by Diana Coupland (1962)

By Chris Cappello on July 1, 2016 • ( Leave a comment )

Underneath the mango tree, me honey and me can watch for the moon / Underneath the mango tree, me honey and me make boolooloop soon It’s James Bond Friday, or #JBF as we like to call it, at the Square Seed Worldwide Headquarters in Gstaad, Switzerland.  Fridays are […]

What is Square Seed?

Square Seed is about the B-Side.  The A-Side is boring.  Everyone knows the A-Side.  The A-Side is Top 40.  The A-Side is #1 at the box office.  Square Seed asks, “What else is there?”  Let’s hear the other side. Let’s see the director’s cut.  Then let’s share whatever comes to mind when inspired by the B-Side.  That’s where the true gold lies.
