Song of the Day

River Song by Dennis Wilson (1977)

One of my close Navy friends used to be a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan and probably still is.  We’d crank the Pumpkins often back in the mid 90’s during their heyday.  He’d get completely lost in Corgan’s majesty and say, “I can’t believe everyone in the world isn’t a Smashing Pumpkins fans.”  I hear you, Brad.

I feel the same way about this song.  Why wasn’t this song a staple of classic rock radio back in the late 70’s?  It’s too goddamn good to be floating around in the vast musical landscape with hardly a soul listening to this piece of heaven.  It has so many flavors to enjoy: a little Elton John, some classic Beach Boys harmonies, and just a touch of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”-style Rolling Stones sprinkled in.  It’s too good to not be treasured by millions.

Wilson was definitely a different cat from what I read.  Drugs, booze, and a relationship with Charles Manson make for quite the life after the Beach Boys.  Still doesn’t change the fact that he had a gift.  Do yourself a favor and listen to the Pacific Ocean Blue album. It’s beauty from a man immersed in anything but.
